So it was time for some of us to find out how destruction of bushland and wetlands, six lanes of bitumen, noise, fumes, lights and water pollution were going to enhance the natural environment of North and Bibra Lakes. While the chosen few went inside to be enlightened, the lucky majority spent a very enjoyable morning standing outside in the winter sun providing the real information to participants with our new, hot off the press flyer.
With our highly professional people counter (really, it had a button and numbers and everything!) we tallied less than 50 people entering the workshop in the morning with even less in the evening, and that included some SMC workers. Considering the direct mailouts, mailouts to residents, local paper inserts, newspaper ads, emails and telephone calls to attract attendees the cost of advertising per head must have been huge.
Outside we were serenaded by local musicians Squid, Dilop, Dave and Phoebe while we chatted, drank cups of tea, and ate cake. It’s a hard life! During the morning we were joined by politicians Sally Talbot (Opposition Spokesperson for Environment) and Greens MLC Lynn Maclaren.
Along with their speeches, we heard from some of our own campaign team including Kate Kelly and Joe Branco. Among other supporters to join us were Sustainability academics Maggie Lillith, Sally Paulin and Isabella Jennings, several botanists, parents from local schools and many from our rapidly growing team of concerned public. With over a hundred rally goers over the course of the day it was a great turnout and more than SMC got with their fancy advertising.
Given that we have a budget of pretty much zilch, compared to SMC’s millions, I think we can put this down as another great success for the campaign.
hi I went along to your protest last week i also went inside to see what they were up to and was extremely upset to see that my children school was not even shown as a school on the map.
I thought the hole idea of these meeting was so that people could make an educated decision how can they do that if not given all the facts.
My children are at Blue Gum Montessori and once a week they walk to Lake side rec center which was also not noted on there map i live in North Lake i would like to get more involved in you fantastic efforts to stop this bloody road.
Hope to hear from you soon claude
Horray, all strength to the little people. Colin Barnett, don’t waste our money.
