It was the morning of Thursday the 22nd of April as the brightly coloured (bright blue coloured that is) crowd gathered below the steps of Parliament House. Most participants had cleverly caught public transport, although Rex and I had opted for the ute, thinking 20 cockatoos, a table and a large bag of T-shirts may have attracted undue attention from the security guards on the train.
The rally took off with an inspiring display of traditional dancing and didgeridoo playing from the young men of halo youth group.
A keen line up of speakers then hit the podium, including the Opposition Leader, Eric Ripper, Greens MLC, Lynn MacLaren, CCWA representative Nicole Hodgsen, Professor Glen Albrecht from Murdoch Uni School of Sustainability, Corina Abrahams from the Cockburn Aboriginal Reference Group, Tim and Adrian from HALO and the Minister for Transport, Simon O’Brien.
For some reason Simon didn’t get as warm a welcome as the others. Maybe he should stop saying Roe 8 will improve the environment! Eric received our extra 2000 petition signatures adding to the 5000 handed over last year. Although we requested that Colin Barnett receive the 1000+ postcards addressed to him he refused, and it was left to Simon O’Brien to attempt to receive them, only to have them spill out of his hands onto the steps.
The turnout of over 200 was great considering it was lunchtime on a weekday and Thanks to everyone who was able to come and we’ll see the rest of you next time!
